China Fictions, English Language PDF
By:A. Robert Lee
Published on 2008-01 by Rodopi

The world is anything but unfamiliar with diaspora: Jewish, African, Armenian, Roma-Gipsy, Filipino/a, Tamil, Irish or Italian, even Japanese. But few have carried so global a resonance as that of China. What, then, of literary-cultural expression, the huge body of fiction which has addressed itself to that plurality of lives and geographies and which has come to be known as “After China”? This collection of essays offers bearings on those written in English, and in which both memory and story are central, spanning the USA to Australia, Canada to the UK, Hong Kong to Singapore, with yet others of more transnational nature. This collection opens with a reprise of woman-authored Chinese American fiction using Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan as departure points. In turn follow readings of the oeuvres of Tan and Frank Chin. A comparative essay takes up novels by Canadian, American and Australian authors from the perspective of migrancy as fracture. Chinese Canada comes into view in accounts of SKY Lee, Wayson Choy, Evelyn Lau and Larissa Lai. Australia under Chinese literary auspices is given a comparative mapping through the fiction of Brian Castro and Ouyang Yu. The English language “China fiction” of Singapore and Hong Kong is located in essays centred, respectively, on Martin Booth and Po Wah Lam, and Hwee Hwee Tan and Colin Cheong. The collection rounds out with portraits of Timothy Mo as British transnational author, a selection of contextual Chinese British stories and art, and the phenomenon of “Chinese Chick Lit” novels. China Fictions/English Language will be of interest to readers drawn both to “After China” as diasporic literary heritage and comparative literature in general.

Novel Histories: British Women Writing History, 1760-1830 explores issues of historical and literary genres, historiography, and the gendering of civic and literary roles. It demonstrates the new and sometimes subversive ways that women authors pushed the limits of writing history in order to participate in contemporary national civic life otherwise closed to them.

A guide to Irish fiction, 1650-1900 PDF
By:Rolf Loeber,Magda Stouthamer-Loeber,Anne Mullin Burnham
Published on 2006 by Four Courts Press

Most Irish fiction published between 1650 and 1900 has fallen into virtual oblivion. Research by the Loebers for their Guide to Irish fiction has led to the identification of hundreds of unknown or forgotten Irish authors and their works, and provides thousands of summaries of novels and anthologies. Carefully documented, A guide to Irish fiction presents details of the publication of Irish fiction in Ireland, England, and North America, as well as several other European countries. Written for literary scholars and students, A guide to Irish fiction constitutes an essential tool also relevant for historians, librarians and antiquarian booksellers. The Guide redefines and extends the known scope of Irish fiction, and exemplifies Lady Morgan's credo that literary fiction serves as 'a mirror of the times in which it was composed; reflecting morals, customs, manners, peculiarity of character, and prevalence of opinion. Thus, perhaps, after all, it forms the best history of nations...'

Irish Novels 1890-1940 PDF
By:John Wilson Foster
Published on 2008-02-21 by Oxford University Press

Most accounts of Irish novels of the period 1890-1922 (between, roughly, the start of the Irish Literary Revival associated with the great names, W.B.Yeats, John M. Synge, Sean O'Casey, and James Joyce, and the creation of the Irish Free State) assume that there was no unbroken tradition of the Irish novel, for various political and social reasons that even operated before and after those dates. Instead, the Irish were triumphant in poetry, drama, and the shortstory. Recovering hundreds of popular and minor novels, Irish Novels 1890-1940 claims that Irish long fictions were plentiful, readable, and - the best of them - illuminating. There were sci-fi romances, detective novels, horror fiction, ghost stories, aesthetic fiction, and feminist novels. Thecontribution to Irish novels of the period of Irish women writers has been entirely overlooked. A postscript bringing the story up to 1940 strengthens the book's claim that there was a popular tradition of the Irish novel and that it was one dominated by women.

Literature and the Irish Famine 1845-1919 PDF
By:Melissa Fegan
Published on 2002-08-08 by Clarendon Press

The impact of the Irish famine of 1845-1852 was unparalleled in both political and psychological terms. The effects of famine-related mortality and emigration were devastating, in the field of literature no less than in other areas. In this incisive new study, Melissa Fegan explores the famine's legacy to literature, tracing it in the work of contemporary writers and their successors, down to 1919. Dr Fegan examines both fiction and non-fiction, including journalism, travel-narratives and the Irish novels of Anthony Trollope. She argues that an examination of famine literature that simply categorizes it as 'minor' or views it only as a silence or an absence misses the very real contribution that it makes to our understanding of the period. This is an important contribution to the study of Irish history and literature, sharply illuminating contemporary Irish mentalities.

Fictional Traces PDF

Published on 2011 by Barkhuis

The study of the reception of the ancient novel and of its literary and cultural heritage is one of the most appealing issues in the story of this literary genre. In no other genre has the vitality of classical tradition manifested itself in such a lasting and versatile manner as in the novel. However, this unifying, centripetal quality also worked in an opposite direction, spreading to and contaminating future literatures. Over the centuries, from Antiquity to the present time there have been many authors who drew inspiration from the Greek and Roman novels or used them as models, from Cervantes to Shakespeare, Sydney or Racine, not to mention the profound influence these texts exercised on, for instance, sixteenth-to eighteenth-century Italian, Portuguese and Spanish literature. Volume I is divided into sections that follow a chronological order, while Volume II deals with the reception of the ancient novel in literature and art. The first volume brings together an international group of scholars whose main aim is to analyse the survival of the ancient novel in the ancient world and in the Middle Ages, in the Renaissance, in the 17th and 18th centuries, and in the modern era. The contributors to the second volume have undertaken the task of discussing the survival of the ancient novel in the visual arts, in literature and in the performative arts. The papers assembled in these two volumes on reception are at the forefront of scholarship in the field and will stimulate scholarly research on the ancient novel and its influence over the centuries up to modern times, thus enriching not only Classics but also modern languages and literatures, cultural history, literary theory and comparative literature.

Fictions of State PDF
By:Patrick Brantlinger
Published on 1996 by Cornell University Press

The economic foundations of modern nation-states involved national debt, public credit, and paper money. Brantlinger traces the emergence of modern, imperial Great Britain from those foundations. He analyzes the process whereby nationalism, both the cause and the result of wars and imperial expansion, multiplied national debt and produced crises of public credit resolved only through more nationalism and war. During the first half of the eighteenth century, conservatives attacked public credit as fetishistic and characterized national debt as alchemical. From the 1850s, the stabilizing theories of public credit authored by David Hume, Adam Smith, Henry Thornton, and others helped initiate the first |social science| economics

History Made, History Imagined PDF
By:David Walter Price
Published on 1999 by University of Illinois Press

In this provocative and original study, David Price investigates history as a form of poiesis -- the act of making in language -- and suggests that certain novels can provide the best means of engaging in historical interpretation. Contending that the fundamental act of narration itself, including the narration of history, expresses a system of values, Price explores the work of seven contemporary novelists who share a commitment to reexamining history as idea and a refusal to accept history as given. Within a theoretical framework based on Friedrich Nietzsche and Giambattista Vico, Price investigates how these writers -- Carlos Fuentes, Susan Daitch, Salman Rushdie, Michel Tournier, Ishmael Reed, Graham Swift, and Mario Vargas Llosa -- create a discursive space between history and literature, a space within which history can be questioned and the making of history explored. Through their novels, these writers replace the univocal expression of history as a description of |what really happened| with a polyvocality of competing discourses, languages, and points of view. Price's investigation of three modalities of the poietic novel -- the history of forgotten possibilities, the construction of countermemory and cultural critique, and history as myth -- has far-reaching implications for how we read and question the narratives we understand as history. By treating the past as a dynamic flow of values, rather than a fixed collection of facts, History Made, History Imagined fosters a deeper understanding not only of literature and philosophy but also of history and our relationship to it.
